About Iaido

Iaido is the martial art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword. In iaido, a student practices set forms (kata), each of which describes a specific scenario and how a swordsman should respond. The roots of iaido date back to 16th century Japan, a time when proficiency with a sword could mean the difference between life and death.

Today, we practice this challenging art as a means of self-refinement. By learning how to skillfully handle a sword we also learn mental focus, balance, economy of motion, awareness of our surroundings, and strengthening of our spirit.

About our dojo

We practice Muso Shinden Ryu iaido (our koryu or "old school" style) and Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei (All-Japan Kendo Federation) seitei iaido and jodo.

New students are welcome! A begining student only needs loose clothing to start. A bokuto (wooden sword) will be used until the student is proficient enough to use an iaito (unsharpened practice sword). Eventually, a shinken (live blade) may be used.
